Hi again. Check out these amazing pictures of the extra sessions MIGHTY ran over Easter......a new project coming soon CREATE. It was so much fun, (although messy) and I got some amazing feedback. The guys brought in pumps, vests, t shirts, hoodies and customised their socks off. Marsha Edwards, the fashionista, great designer from London was great (check out her blog www.sweetmecouture.blogspot.com) and she'll be helping MIGHTY out again for costumes and uniforms for the event over the next few weeks. They all loved her as well, she had them designing away and they took it so seriously and left with something they could wear!! The second week they all painted on canvasses, all pertaining to being GIFTED, or to do with 'the arts'. This was a lot of fun, (another messy session-I had no apron but thank God I left as clean as I came in) and great to see them loving being creative and coming up with innovative designs and using quotes.

Looking forward to doing this project again....soon!!!

G.I.F.T.E.D.

Wow feels like it has been forever!! So much has happened over the last 9 weeks.....everything from face painting to music production, customising to play writing, acting to salsa, singing to poetry. We have crammed so much into this project and with so much on offer it is a major success. The young people are 'gifted' just like I knew they would be and they and everyone involved are really working hard. The Showcase event is coming up soon but we still have another 6 weeks worth of sessions not to mention another 7 after the event to prepare for The Grove Theatre-Style of Wrytings Hollywood Night. Hard work pays off so I know these young people will shine like the stars they are!!!

AS MUMMA USED TO SAY…LIFE IS PRECIOUS

I have found it so interesting the last couple of weeks working with the young people who have come into the GIFTED project.

They all have different personalities;funny, quiet, loud, happy, bubbly, shy. However they are all special. In this LIFE all children need to know is that they are SPECIAL!! This is the Foundation (key word) that stands them in good stead to move forward onto a progressive, successful adult life. Obviously, with being told you’re special, you need the good role models, so much love, support and rules in place to ensure that you become a grounded person with morals and self control.

However seeing all of these different talented young people it made me think about LIFE..how quickly it goes…nearing 30 and it feels like I was 11 not so long ago myself…not to take LIFE for granted and to remember those less fortunate then myself! And very importantly, to ensure every young person I know or come into contact with leaves if not already, knowing how SPECIAL they are and how Special their LIFE is!!

GIFTED [Getting Involved For True Edification and Development]

The project runs from Tuesday 23rd February 6pm-7.30pm and is 18 sessions over 16 weeks.

Why Does It Have To Be Nike?

Upon asking this question I myself am even smiling….as when I was younger I remember the waiting for the latest pair of Kickers or that must have outfit. I never always got them and for many nowadays that’s how it is too. It is always important to check the History of things because it is the only way for you to know the meaning of it and the future.

The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight, and officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978. The company takes its name from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory (Greek Νίκη pronounced [níːkɛː]), (so some of us who were wearing Nicks were actually still wearing the brand name! lol!). It is also based on Egyptian usage of "strength" and "victory".

However, why does it have to be NIKE? STONE ISLAND? VERSACE? ARMANI? or any other name brand attire?

Is it because young people love the quality and the craftsmanship, sheer time and effort that has gone into the creating, or can they appreciate the intricacy and the feel it has upon their skin or should we keep it real…..is it that so many of their ‘role models’ i.e. Rappers, singers, football players are wearing them. This is Nike's biggest advertising strategy because they know society is influenced by these people, but what have they really done to be titled "role models". Is it because if you don’t have them in certain areas you’re considered “a chief”, “a wasteman”, “late” basically words used to say you’re rubbish due to the fact you don’t look as other young people feel you need to look.

Who actually made these rules? And who says you have to wear something to have a particular status? I won’t play dumb as I too fell into this whole ‘looking the part” thing when I was younger and the sad thing is that so many young people buy into this. Last thing I heard when God created us we were all naked. Clothes are now a necessity to keep us warm, and believe it or not contrary to fashion to give us some dignity and privacy.

But really, why does it have to be NIKE? Or any other name brand. Is society so shallow now that young people with all their wit, charisma and destiny are actually measured by what they wear...Yes its been like this since I was a teen, however with all the gang wars, knife crime over petty things and lack of respect of individuals, where they come from and what their status is. Shouldn’t we be looking into this deeper and showing each other that we are far too special to be measured by fabric that wastes away and that in time fashion expires, whereby we will always remain special!

As a youth growing up I’ve seen and been through a lot and this has made me respect other people in their struggle and also respect youths who are motivated to do well. From what I’ve been through I’ve learnt a lot and believe you can turn negative to positive it’s just up to you. Most of the youth will follow but what they see would most likely be the wrong thing to follow, so as I stopped following the world and those around me I became a leader and me knowing what is right from wrong helped me manage to get on the right path through my own leadership.

When I look at society nowadays I believe a gulf has been formed between the older and younger generations. In my opinion no one side is solely to be blamed but I feel the only way for the gulf to be bridged is to start up a dialogue between the two generations. As a young man myself I have come to realise the importance of learning from the experiences of people who have come before; this learning experience isn’t a 1-way street and often times I impart some knowledge into the older person I’m seeking counsel from. For me, I see it as a duty to pass on whatever experiences/knowledge I have onto people younger than me so that they can benefit from it. The young people are the future and they can only achieve their potential if we show them the way.
