A day in Keech Children Hospice

A visit to Keech Hospice For Children

Hi guys my name is Claudia and I am currently working with Mighty! I began to get mentored a couple of weeks ago on the G.R.A.C.E project and I’ve currently been working in the office based in The Hat Factory as an intern for over a month now and plan to stay here until next year when I will be going off to university to study social work. I have decided to write this blog to sort of document one of many experiences since I’ve been here.
On Wednesday 13th October I attended a visit at Keech Hospice For Children, before I arrived I sort of had an idea of what to expect and knew it would be an emotional morning. Keech is a place which provides endless support, both physical and moral support, the nurses and other staff provides 24/7 a week care to the parents and children who unfortunately are suffering from conditions which have been diagnosed to be terminally ill. We were greeted and showed to a conference room where some questions were asked and found out a bit more about what they did, followed by a video which included some of the parents talking about how helpful Keech had been and I could see how much they appreciated a place like this which not only knew how to deal with such situation but also provided professional practitioners which allowed the parents time to enjoy precious moments with significant others rather than being on their toes and worrying about medical issues. During the visit I realised how important it is for places like this to receive donations so they can continue providing a helping hand, this way these children along with the parents can have wonderful memories of the time spent with each other. At Keech any small gesture is much appreciated as I found out on Wednesday when we took in a bag with goodies for the kids, fund raising pots and cup cakes decorated with their “Keech” logo, which were made by Joelle Eyeson(thanks for that) another young person who was mentored by Lennina at Mighty and now owns her own cup cake company. Overall this experience made me thank god for all my blessings and put my life in perspective.

create

Hi again. Check out these amazing pictures of the extra sessions MIGHTY ran over Easter......a new project coming soon CREATE. It was so much fun, (although messy) and I got some amazing feedback. The guys brought in pumps, vests, t shirts, hoodies and customised their socks off. Marsha Edwards, the fashionista, great designer from London was great (check out her blog www.sweetmecouture.blogspot.com) and she'll be helping MIGHTY out again for costumes and uniforms for the event over the next few weeks. They all loved her as well, she had them designing away and they took it so seriously and left with something they could wear!! The second week they all painted on canvasses, all pertaining to being GIFTED, or to do with 'the arts'. This was a lot of fun, (another messy session-I had no apron but thank God I left as clean as I came in) and great to see them loving being creative and coming up with innovative designs and using quotes.

Looking forward to doing this project again....soon!!!

Wow feels like it has been forever!! So much has happened over the last 9 weeks.....everything from face painting to music production, customising to play writing, acting to salsa, singing to poetry. We have crammed so much into this project and with so much on offer it is a major success. The young people are 'gifted' just like I knew they would be and they and everyone involved are really working hard. The Showcase event is coming up soon but we still have another 6 weeks worth of sessions not to mention another 7 after the event to prepare for The Grove Theatre-Style of Wrytings Hollywood Night. Hard work pays off so I know these young people will shine like the stars they are!!!
